WARN Ledger

How long will your savings last after a layoff?

Enter your numbers. The result updates as you type. US dollars only.

Cash and easy-to-sell savings, in US dollars.
After tax, if you know it. Zero if none.
Rent or mortgage, utilities, insurance, debt payments.
Food, transport, subscriptions, everything else.
COBRA or a marketplace plan. Zero if it is covered.
Unemployment benefits, a partner, side work. Benefit amounts differ by state.

How the number is worked out

Cash is your savings plus any severance. Monthly spending is must-pay costs, flexible spending and health insurance. The runway is cash divided by spending minus income. If income covers spending, your cash is not draining.

The gauge uses the common marks of 3, 6 and 12 months. They are rules of thumb, not guarantees.

What it leaves out

  • Taxes on severance, benefits or withdrawals.
  • One-off bills such as moving costs or a car repair.
  • Benefits that end on a set date. Unemployment insurance amounts and length are set by each state: check yours.
